The Story Behind the School

Melissa Anderson, Founder, Owner, and Director of Katharos School of Esthetics, has devoted her life to the art and education of beauty. Her journey began in 1986, working hands-on as a stylist, salon owner, and skincare professional—experiences that shaped her deep understanding of both the craft and the industry. In 1996, she transitioned into teaching, where she discovered her true calling: equipping the next generation of estheticians with both skill and confidence.

Today, Melissa has been appointed by Governor Andy Beshear to a new position on Board of Cosmetology, representing Esthetics in Kentucky. She is the first to ever represent and hold this position.

Driven by a passion for education, Melissa graduated Magna Cum Laude from Eastern Kentucky University with a degree in Career and Technical Education, later earning her Master of Science in Occupational Training. Over the past 30 years, she has built an exceptional career as a community college educator, program coordinator, and professor, mentoring countless students in cosmetology and esthetics. Her leadership and impact were nationally recognized in 2012 when she became the first recipient of the “Excellence in Esthetics Education” award.

Beyond the Classroom, Melissa is deeply committed to serving her community, along with working as a State Trainer for American Cancer Society’s Look Good Feel Better Program, she has also partnered her school with Redeeming Hope, Group Home, where students annually sell spa packages to her customers, and donate all the proceeds to this charity, that helps young girls who have suffered the effects of human trafficking.

Katharos School of Esthetics is a reflection of Melissa’s lifelong dedication—built on experience, guided by purpose, and committed to raising the standard of esthetics education. Proud members of Commerce Lexington and the Better Business Bureau, we are also an approved vendor for Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation and hold Premier School Status with Associated Skin Care Professionals.

Our graduates don’t just leave prepared—they often return to pour back into the next generation. After completing their education, clinical hours, and licensure, many come back to share firsthand insight into life beyond the classroom. Through guest teaching, presentations, and mentorship, they offer honest stories about building a clientele, navigating the hiring process, and growing in the industry. Their real-world perspective brings clarity, confidence, and connection to current students. It’s a full-circle experience that keeps our education grounded, relevant, and deeply rooted in community.
